Cheetahs are 44-59 inches long and 23-31 inches tall, and weigh 77- 143 pounds. They are expected to live ten-twelve years in the wild. Woodlands and grasslands in Africa and the Middle East are their habitat. Although its believed cheetahs originated in southern Asia, today most cheetahs live on the vast plains of Africa. The cheetah is the fastest animal on land, reaching speeds of sixty to seventy miles an hour over short distances. Their fame have inspired the Disney movie called Cheetah Girls about a young female pop group. The gestation period for the female is three month after which three to six cubs are born. Cheetahs usually live alone; sometimes males will travel with two or three other cheetahs. The cheetahs communicate by marking trees, termite mounds, and shrubs with their waste. The world's population of cheetah ranges from 9000-12000 animals. Namibia houses the largest population, estimated at 2500. The North American population is stabilizing. Death rates have been reduced and birth rates have increased. Although problems with survival and reproduction have characterized the cheetah for years, there has been steady improvement.
